The slogan T-Shirt is by no means a new trend, if you can even call it a trend at all. Did it ever really die like the peddle pushers and Kicker’s school shoes I so ashamedly fought with my mother to obtain? Although I’m confident those ‘trends’ will never come back to life, at least I hope not. It’s a fashion staple worn by all walks of life, by all ages, sexes and even precious pets worldwide. More than a trend, the slogan Tee is a wardrobe essential, a never think twice purchase, a way for each of us to voice our opinions, our beliefs and put our personalities on our chests and out for the world to see. And trust me, it sees with that positioning.
It has stood the test of time through celebrity shade throwing, Britney’s 2007 melt down outreach and female empowerment. But, most recently, during the New York Fashion Week Prabal Gurung Autumn/Winter ’17/18 show. Gurung took the opportunity to voice his political views on the chests of models such as Bella Hadid and Joan Smalls for his show finale, shedding light on the issues that have become so real to the new generations. A statement so bold in an era of such political turmoil, these statements were no surprise at all, in fact the activist in me is whooping at the sight of them.
The slogan Tee is an avenue for your inner fashionista to declare yourself and your opinions, or even just the fact that you believe in unicorns to your world. It’s the go to, sling it on with jeans, reliable wardrobe must have that will never date, never be off trend, and will always age gracefully. If your wardrobe is slogan-less, here are some I picked up recently from the High Street to point you in the right direction. As they say, every street’s a catwalk, make yours count.
